SPORTS/WORK/OTHER ACTIVITIES
While we attempt to make every effort to accommodate many individual schedules, the priority for Production team relies upon the commitment to making GREASE a successful production. Therefore, attendance is expected at every rehearsal. If you cannot give up 20 Saturdays of your high school life, please do not audition. Attendance is mandatory beginning in January (one month before the show). There can be no conflicts during this period of time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask Mrs.VanGenne. ABOUT THE SHOW
The show was originally a play with some incidental music and first appeared under the title GREASE LIGHTNING. The script was based on Jim Jacobs’ experience at William Taft High School.
GREASE premiered February 14, 1972 at the Eden Theatre inNew York Citystarring the now popular celebrity Barry Bostwick. The film version debut in 1978 and had an all-star cast. Notables included John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John. Stockard Channing, and the list goes on and on. A Broadway revival started in 1994 boosting the career of the now celebrity Rosie O’Donnell. The musical has produced several touring productions and just finished a revival in August of this year inChicagofeaturing much of the original music.
Our production will be a combination of the original stage, the 1994 Broadway revival, and the movie versions of GREASE. The show will feature the Thunderbirds and the Pink Ladies and have a variety of supporting roles.
CAST OF CHARACTERS
Danny Zuko – The leader of the Thunderbirds. He is nice-looking, with an air of cool, easy-going charm. Often attempts to be cocky but is actually strong and confident.
Sandy Dumbrowski – New in town, a wholesome, pure, kind, clumsy, and innocent girl. Sandy originally planned on going to a Catholic school but changed plans and went to Rydell High. She is a goody-goody who does not drink, smoke, swear, or rat her hair, and the Pink Ladies tease her about her attitude. Falls in love with Danny Zuko over the summer break.
The Pink Ladies: The club-jacketed, gum-chewing, hip-swinging girls’ gang that hangs around with the Thunderbirds.
Rizzo – Tough and sarcastic leader of the Pink Ladies; does not like to hang out with Sandy because she is not tough enough. She’s a little rough around the edges but does not care what others think of her. Rizzo is also a girl with a "reputation". She feels Sandy is too good-goody and wholesome to be a Pink Lady.
Frenchy – A dreamer. Good-natured and dumb. Heavily made-up, fussy about her appearance-particularly her hair. She can’t wait to finish high school so she can be a beautician. She’s a little light-headed and in her own world.
Marty – Called the "beauty" in most production scripts. Often appears older than the other girls, but betrays her real age when she opens her mouth. She tries to act sophisticated. She has an attraction for older, more established in their career men.
Jan – Funny, loud and proud. She’s pushy with the girls, but completely shy with the boys; often acting like a young school girl when she’s around the Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds; often referred to as the T-Birds:
Kenickie – The tough and rude second-in-command of the Thunderbirds. He has a tattoo, often appears anger, and avoids any show of softness. He has an off-beat sense of humor.
Doody – is the youngest member of the Thunderbirds. Doody is very boyish and naive, with a disarming smile and a hero-worshipping attitude toward the other guys. Note from the director: It would be great if Doody played the guitar or perhaps the piano, but not required.
Sonny – An obnoxious yet hard to understand member of the Thunderbirds. He’s considered the “wise Guy” of the Thunderbirds. Sonny is often portrayed as an Italian-American, but the most important part is that his character is portrayed as a real “lady killer”.
Roger – The jolly prankster member of the Thunderbirds, perhaps the stocky build type. Full of mischief, half-baked schemes and ideas, Roger is a clown who enjoys putting other people on. Roger has a notable crush on Jan but has a difficult time explaining his romantic feelings.
Patty Simcox – a typical pretty, peppy, cheerleader, and perky. She's a bit of a pain and unpopular with the Pink Ladies; nominated for Student council President. Attractive and athletic, aggressive, sure of herself, and given to bursts of disconcerting enthusiasm; catty, but in an All-American Girt soft of way. She attempts to be friends with Sandy to hang with the Pink Ladies. In secret, we feel that deep down inside Patty wants to be a Pink Lady.
Cheerleaders – typical bouncy cheerleaders who idolize Patty and follow her around. They are extremely athletic with gymnastic abilities.
Miss Lynch – A loud, no-nonsense, serious, English teacher turned principal.
Blanche – is the clueless office assistant to Miss Lynch and reader of the school announcements.
Eugene Florczyk – A silly, pompous but gullible nerd. He ends up with Patty Simcox.
Vince Fontaine – An egotistical, slimy radio disk jockey trying to relive his teenage years.
“Cha-Cha” DiGregorio - Apparently the best dancer at St. Bernadette's Catholic High School; accidently wins the dancing competition with Danny, but gets dumped. She has a wonderful solo/duet with another girl.
JohnnyCasino – All-American, rock-n-roll rock-star student at Rydell High that leads a band, whose real name is Clarence. He would like to think of himself as an idol.
Teen Angel – Can be played by a male or female. Appears as Frenchy’s Guardian Angel to sing and dance the comedy song, "Beauty School Dropout". Usually portrayed as a teen idol, this part often features a guest star. Depending upon auditions, the director will make the decision to cast a high school student or use a local guest star. (teacher, alumni… : )
Sheila, Hero, and Scientist - Characters from the movie playing while at the Drive-in.
BeautySchoolBeauticians – A girl group of singers that will be back-up singers/dancers for Teen Angel.
Sock-Hops – An ensemble of girls that will portray high school students, teachers, drive-in and Becky’sBurgerPalace patrons.
Greasers – An ensemble of guys that will portray high school students, teachers, jocks, the rival “gang”, drive-in and Becky’s Burger Palace patrons, and the auto mechanic students.
While we want as many students as possible to audition, we will not have 200 people in every ensemble number. We will wait until after auditions to determine how many people will be in ensemble number.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to see Mrs.VanGenne. Our job is to make sure that you have the best possible audition. Auditions will be closed; meaning that only you and the casting team will be in the room for the audition. We have assembled a casting team with many years of musical theatre experience to assist us in the casting process. However, the director has the final decision in casting the show. Thank you for your interest in auditioning and the entire staff looks forward to seeing you at auditions.
